Roan Shankaruk

Roan specializes in singing vintage jazz songs from the 1910s -1940s, accompanying herself on ukulele. She has been busking at Granville Island since she was fourteen years old and says that it has been a wonderful learning experience! It’s never boring here, there’s always something going on, whether it’s kids running circles around her, gulls squawking overhead, or couples jiving to her songs.
Roan is a University of British Columbia graduate, with a double major in Opera Performance and Composition. She has been in thirty or so operas and musicals since age ten, including “The Magic Flute” with the Vancouver Opera, where she made her professional opera debut as “Third Spirit”.
Roan is also a composer and has written a number of works performed by festivals and performing companies across Canada. In 2018 Roan was selected as a composer for the Vancouver Opera New Works Project, where she composed two opera excerpts that were performed as part of the Vancouver Opera Festival. At the 2019 Fringe Festival she produced her first Opera, a one act chamber opera called “The Woman Who Borrowed Memories”.
Roan is currently working on her Masters in Opera Performance at the University of Manitoba (brrr) where she received a two year Graduate Fellowship. She is studying Opera Performance with eminent (and beloved) Canadian soprano, Tracy Dahl.
